2015 - JANUARY SHOWS / SF

ARTSpan SELECTIONS, RATIO 3, SPOKE ART

JAN10 / SPOKE ART GALLERY & , 816 SUTTER ST. SF

Supersonic invitational group exhibit - curator mr. Zach Tutor

artists: Sail "Sagari", Jen Mann, Henrik Uldalen "Congeal", Joann Nam, Robert Bowen, Joel Danniel Philips, Lucien Shapiro, Robert Bowen "Mosquito", David Sloen "Something to care for", Meryl Pataky "Look Up", Peter Adamyan, Casey Weldon "Spacing out".

A good portion of the exhibit could be "filed" as a "San Francisco-type-of-art-selection": lots of female portraiture where women with magical fairy-tale like powers, women transofrmed into animal-like creatures; structures and environments which are set in fairy tale dark outline or silhouetted against a fairy tale like background. did i mention dark fairy-tale? I say, very much in the taste of other galleries in the city like Modern Eden, Varnish Art... there might be others. Some of the pieces are executed with a beautiful precision and a good painting hand. Lots of realistically conceived portraiture, it's a big trend in SF. Although seemingly refering to some other deeper meanings, are, frankly, not going very far. Am i too harsh? Maybe, there were two pieces that worked for me: Sail "Sagari" (for its impecable technique), and Jen Mann "Yep".

poooof! visually quite interesting. it somehow makes me think of something Ninja Turtle may do to be able to disguise and disappear: here I am - poof! - and not i'm gone. What are these pictures interested in communicating: obsuring? yet they are very sharply in focus! Hiding? yet thin bright colored smoke is so evanescent and momentary. I wonder if this is poison! Is this poison? is it a concept for poison air; a dust storm out of a test tube?

(2) Thin muddy oils (below), intentionally dirty, un-pretty-ied... like them very much for their frankness and tortured landscape.
